Newbie question about Directory Utility (windows shares)

I have a newbie question about the Directory Utility in Mac OSX 10.5 -- did a search on google but I didnt get any good answers.

The scenario was that normally in Windows a folder is being shared off the Server 2003 machine that says only person A,B,C can access it, everyone else is denied. Thats fine and dandy for PC users, but for Macs users when I tried to view the folder the Mac showed an empty folder as if nothing was in it! I knew this was not the case and I browsed to it successfully in a PC.

A co-worker who knows more about macs that I told me that you can use Directory Utility to connect to Windows shared folders that require you to have permissions to access them. He pointed to the Mac HDD > Utility folder> Directory Utility and did something about connecting to it and then he hit Connect As and I typed in my Windows credentials and I was now able to view them!

Could anyone please explain to me what he did -- I haven't been able to get in touch with him and its like a brain-teaser in my mind!

Thanks in advance!!
