NIC has 2 IP addresses!

For some reason my built in network card on my PowerBook always thinks it has an ip address of 192.168.2.1, even when their is not a cable pluged into the laptop. I can plug into a network, and it will then pull another address. This usually is not a problem. In fact I did not notice it until I pluged into a network that had a gateway of 192.168.2.1. The DHCP gave me an address like 192.168.2.>100. But my laptop was confused by the fact that the gateway was one of the address that the computer thought belonged to itself.

Basicly, how do I fix this. I am running 10.3, but I cannot seem to figure out how to make my network card drop the 192.168.2.1 address.

Thank you.

I'm going to say this even though I'm sure you've tried it already.

  1. Go to System Preferences
  2. Select Network
  3. Change your TCP/IP settings to DHCP (not the manual address through DHCP)

Hopefully, that should do it. Let us know if it doesn't...

Yeah, I have already done that...in fact I think that is how my problem orignally started. I normally use DHCP, but I needed a static IP for a network I was on. So I set my IP address to 192.168.2.1. After I was done I set my IP address to be retreved from DHCP. So I think that is how my problem originally started...it does not make any sense to me.

I have tried restarting, just thinking it was some stupid glitch...plus I installed some updates and had to restart, but that did not fix the problem either.

I didn't really understand your problem, so I will just shoot into the dark room:
do you have airport or bluetooth active? Those devices support TCP/IP as well. Maybe that's the source of confusion

If DHCP isn't available, the system will set the IP address to another configuration, which is what it sounds like is happening.

If you select static again you'll probably see that it kept your settings for that configuration. Delete all the static IP address info, DNS server, subnet mask etc, reselect DHCP and click Apply Now and it should get rid of the static IP settings.

You can also keep the other static IP set up if you create another Location for that DHCP site. That way you have two separate locations for each site: one for the static IP and another for the dynamic IP.

Sorry about the confusion...

My built in, wired, NIC has somehow decided to keep 192.168.2.1 as an address....look below:

Right now (as of the picture) I am connected to the internet, and that is it. But the device still thinks it has 2 address. The network settings are set to DHCP, and I have not used static addresses since the problem originated.

This would not be a problem, in fact it would not have been noticed, except for one of my work networks has a gateway of 192.168.2.1...and my notebook gets confused about being told that the gateway is itself. But the work network I am refering to also uses DHCP....either way something strange is going on and I cannot figure it out.

I just wanted to post and let everyone know that I figured out the problem. I had my laptop set to share my wireless connection over my wired connection...I had forgotten that I had enabled, and thusly never disbaled.

I was unaware that a NIC could hold more than 1 IP address at a given time. I disabled internet sharing, and my laptop works the way I expect it now.

This was a rather odd problem, and I thank everyone who helped.

--Thanks.
