No audio balance control on G4 iMacs?

A friend of mine just bought a 17" G4 iMac, and he asked me how to adjust the audio balance. I told him to go to the Sound preference panel, click on Output, and adjust the slider. He says there isn't any slider, it just says "There are no settings available for selected device."

Seems kinda strange to me. What kind of "Digital Hub" wouldn't have a balance control for the audio?

What OS is he using? Is he using the speakers that came with the computer?

OS X 10.2.6, which came pre-installed on the iMac (after running a bunch of updates via Software Update). The speakers are the little globular ones that ship with iMacs.

He might not be in the correct tab.
Go to the system Preferences (light switch)> Sound. Now click on the output tab. He should have a balance slider and a volume slider.

Also, make sure he is logged in as admin/owner. If he is logged in to an additional user, he may not have the privilege to adjust the sound.

He's looking at the "Output" tab, and the dialog that says "There are no settings available for selected device" (which is the Built-in audio controller).

You don't need to be an administrator to change the volume or balance.

Strange. Have him go to the Utility folder and run Disk Utility. The first aide tab will verify permissions, then he must repair permissions.
This might correct the problem. A restart might also correct the problem.
Make sure he has those speakers plugged in the correct port.
