no luck with tarballs

i just got x11 and enlightenment running on my g4 powerbook (panther) and so i am starting to install my old tarballs. but i cannot get any of them to compile. i cannot get any of the ./configure files to finish.
usually i get an error saying that i need libast. so i got a tar of that and was able to configure it, but then got errors with make...

is there anything that i need to do before i will be able to compile anything. or are there certain builds that i need to look for?

Other than developer tools, you should be OK to start compiling. That said, "this and that library is missing" type errors can really try your patience...

i installed the developer tools pkg that was on my hd when i got the computer.. i have updated just about everything that i can think of through fink as well.

i am starting to remember why i got away from computers in the first place.
