no port shown in chooser (classic mode)

ok, I've seen this problem in quite a few places, always without anyone able to help. here 'tis: when attempting to print in classic mode, i go to the chooser, select a printer, and lo, no port to select shows in the chooser window. its a beige g3 with 10.1.5 - i've tried printer, modem and usb ports. i dont have much hair left, so i dont want to tear it out.. any ideas???????:confused:
 
Yes, it's very annoying. For me, usually the Chooser works OK but sometimes it loses its connection.

Unfortunately, the only cure I've found so far is to restart Classic. Not the most elegant solution. Does anybody else have a better solution?
