Non Apple Monitor

Hello all,
I just purchased a desktop Mac, but I wanted to get a non-Apple monitor. I was looking at the Dell 2407 FPW. I have found out that other Mac-users like this monitor as well. However, someone told me that the Dell colors might not work so well with the Mac. The accuracy of the colors are very important to me.

What monitor would you recommend? Someone suggest Sony's Trinitron.

Also, would I need an adapter of sorts for any non-apple monitor?

Thank you for your time.

The current Apple desktops use DVI for video out. This is a fairly recent standard, far superior to VGA in quality, so you'd need to check that the monitor you want to buy has DVI in.

Older Mac desktops used ADC (Apple Display Connector). An adapter is available from the Apple store to convert the ADC signal to VGA.

I would recommend considering the Apple displays, though. They are very good quality and are likely to hold a better value if you should decide to sell your system later on.

I got the Dell 24" and I think it is the exact model you are looking at.

It indeed has DVI-in however I have only used it with my MacBook and I don't know much about Mac on the desktop. If your Mac has DVI out then it should work.

i've got the dell FP2006W (20") and the apple 20". i have more trouble getting the colours right on the apple than the dell, the dell has a nice colour profile, but the backlighting is not so even. the apple 20" i find difficult to counter a yellowish tone to it.

Either way, you would use Colorsync in the display pane to sort it.

Sony Trinitron was Sony's (great!) technology for CRT monitors. Great monitors in the 90s. But I'm not sure you really want one of those nowadays.

If you really need excellent colors, you may need to stick with CRTs, but good CRTs are expensive and large. Otherwise Samsung has very good LCD screens.

Thanks, I will look into the Samsung.

I have a small amount of workable area in my apartment, so the CRT's aren't feasible for me.

I did look into Sony's selection of monitors. They don't make them anymore!!
They have stopped production on all desktops and computer monitors. The salesperson said that I can purchase a 24 inch tv and hook it up to the computer to act like a monitor. The 24 inch runs about $1,000.

That's why I can't find any info on them. They use to make a good LCD
monitor called the premier pro.

While you _can_ use a 24" TV as your monitor, its brightness and resolution just ain't anything like a computer monitor's. The picture's too bright, generally, and the resolution's too low. Unless it does 1080p, maybe, but even then I'd suggest getting a "real" computer display.

I'm using a ViewSonic VP2030 20" LCD and think it's terrific. Bright with accurate colors and exceptional sharpness at 1600x1200.
