Not a Mac :(

The Late: SuperMacMod
My sisters nephew has a PC, sorry. He wants to find out how he can upgrade it. Can't talk him into a Mac. I don't know anything about upgrading PC's, but I know some people here use them and may be able to help. This is what he has;
====================================
1997 Packard Bell Multimedia S605

Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology or Pentium MMX (233 MHz)

24 MB SDRam DIMMs,expandable to 128 MB on the motherboard or more of
Synchronous RAM or Extended Data OUT Dynamic RAM (EDO DRAM), 2 DIMM
sockets 64 MB DIMM is limited of one socket.

2 MB EDO video RAM

USB support, up to 127 devices

32 bit color

Advanced 64-bit S3d TM engine S3 streams Processor

S3 Trio64 V2 2Dgrapics/Video Accelerator

50/60/66 MHz bus speed
====================================

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

The board is very old. There is not much he can do. CPU is max.
He could max out ram. EDO is easily found on ebay.
And even the graphic card could be renewed. There are some PCI cards with up to 32mb Vram such as TNT2 cards. There are also some processor-alternatives from "evergreen" and Co. which promise to perform like AMD K6 500, but I never tried.
If I sum up the prices for all these components, it might get more expensive than going for a new one...
Now you have another great chance to convince him to mac, Bob! ;)

Thanks Sam

I'm just going to tell him to buy a new machine. He can get a much faster PC for about $500.00, and from what I've looked at, that would be cheaper than upgrading the one he has.

Good call! That box wasn't even worth upgrading in 1998 :) Packard Bell's were the worst PC's I've ever delt with in trying to upgrade.

If you have an extra Mac that you don't need (you can never have too many Macs, but you don't necessarily need all of them... :)), sell it to him. Tell him he won't get a better computer for such a good price except maybe on eBay.

Also, look for someone who knows how to build PC's in your area. Talk to someone about possibly building a PC for your friend.

Also, when getting a new one, try building one from scratch. There's not much you can do wrong as most parts fit one place and only there, and pcguide.com is the Macosx.com of PCs, they help very much. This may not be very visible in terms of benchmarking, but it will sure be easier to upgrade in the future.
