I just responded to a notice to upgrade software security and something for itunes and after they loaded when I restarted by G4 macbook pro wioth OS 10.4.11 it would not boot past the grey screen. Finally, I got it to boot by holding down various buttons but now I am afraid to shut down the computer. Am I doing something wrong here?

Were you running 10.4.11 before? It sounds like you might have installed an OS update. After installing an OS update, it usually takes a long time to reboot -- long enough so that you might force it off assuming it had crashed (I've done it!).

Realistically it shouldn't take more than a few minutes, but I'd say give it 10 before you panic.
