Odd Boot Issue

Cant boot from CD or HD.

But, if I remove the HD I can boot from CD.

Still, after booting from CD if I return the HD and try to reboot from CD again, I get through the boot process and then face the wrist watch of death forever--e.g. my computer freezes after booting and I can just watch the wrist watch for hours etc.

Any help?
 
I'd try to replace the HD then... Are we talking SCSI or IDE? If it's SCSI, it could be a termination problem. If it's IDE, it could be that you have to set either the harddrive or CD-ROM to master/slave differently. Did you change something like that before it stopped working? If there were no changes, I'd really try with another harddrive.
