Odd OS problem with Remote Access??

My boss brought his old 233MHz iMac (OS 9.2.2) in as it was having a few problems starting up and with Remote Access.

It basically start-ups Ok but then waits for what seems 5 or more minutes before the desktop shows up. Sometimes you would have to force quit the finder as the desktop would just lock up (hard disk icon selected but unable to do anything).

After some time of running some extension/control panel conflict tests etc I came to the conclusion that it is Remote Access causing the problem – as the control Strip icon for Remote Access was missing but was there in the System folder.

I ran disk repair, removed preferences, removed and reinstalled Remote Access, but still no joy.

When trying to access the control panel it said it could not be opened because "controller" could not be found.

Anyone have any ideas / help on this.

Try this:

Go to the preference folder and delete the Finder Pref file. Close the windows and select restart. Immediately hold down the option and the apple (command) key. Continue holding until a dialog box comes up asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. This will come up after the extensions have loaded at the bottom of the screen. Release the keys and click on the okay button. When this is done, you should have no problems.

By the way, how much memory is on the machine. Go to the Apple Menu>Control Panels>memory. Make sure Virtual memory is on and RAM disk is off. In the Virtual Memory section it will tell you how much physical memory is installed.

Have tried that, no joy. My boss was in a rush so has opted to send it of to 'authorised Apple service' dudes so I'm now out of the loop. Glad in a way, can get on with my proper job ;-)

All it probably needed was a clean install of the OS.
Oh well, maybe it is better that he took it in to the 'experts'.
