Off Macworld but...Using mac as server question.

Holmes

Humble God
I'm trying to get a webpage up using the built in apache server that comes with OSX. I've got most everything ironed out so the webpage works and all, except that my address changes everytime I restart my computer. I'm using PacBell DSL. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on an address that won't change? Thanks everybody.

You can call & find out if the provide static IPs or not. I know with my Cable modem, although it is not static, the IP hasn't changed in 4 months. :)

Also, you could a dynamic IP DNS service that will see your IP change and update the DNS records automatically... giving you a rather seemless option even with a dynamic IP.

Yeah, it's hard to serve up a website with a static IP. Your provider won't like it if your site get really popular. However, if it's just a site to share info with family and friends that it won't be a problem.

You do have a problem if your hostname isn't available via dns. Anyway, you're going to need to start paying people.

I bet you're ISP (assuming they even offer it) will charge about $15 more for an account with a static ip address. A cheaper option is to go to www.dynip.com and pay them $36 per year. The only downside is that your address will be name_of_site.dynip.com instead of www.mysweetdomainname.com .

I hope this helps.

I managed to find a FREE DNS service :)

Right now I have it pretty slopilly set up so the address is a tad long but here it is. I'm currently trying to figure out how to get it to work without the holmesf thing then I might just pay for photoexpression.com with them which would be a ONE time fee of like 30 bucks. I would highly recommend this company to anyone because they really are non profit.

Here's their address:

http://dyndns.org/

And here's mine (under construction)

http://expressionphoto.homelinux.com/~holmesf/

Oh yah, and if it doesn't work its because my Tibook is off, I still have to get my old computer set up as the server.

Thank you guys sooo much!:D :D :D :D :p
