Microsoft has apparently announced the pricing for Office 2008, which is expected to be out in January. There will be three versions:

  • Special Media Edition ($499.95 for full verison, $299.95 for the upgrade) - includes support for Exchange and Automator Actions in Workflows plus has Expression Media
  • Standard Edition ($399.95 for full verison, $239.95 for the upgrade) - includes support for Exchange and Automator Actions in Workflows
  • Home and Student Edition ($149.95 for full version) - no Exchange support

Good news is that anyone who buys Office 2004 between now and the release of Office 2008 will get a "free" upgrade. Only the packaging costs need to be paid. Those who buy a Standard Edition of Office 2004 get the Standard Edition of Office 2008. Those who buy upgrades to Office 2004 will receive an upgrade to Office 2008. Those who buy the Student and Teacher version of Office 2004 get the, you guessed it, Home and Student version of Office 2008.

I think the offer of the free upgrades sounds quite good, although I have to admit the full price of Office never ceases to make me wince...
 
Could be time for iWork, Google Apps, etc. $149 seems a bit much to me for a basic version. You get Leopard for $20 less..
 
Funnily enough, I already have a plethora of applications that get the same tasks done. :)

I agree. I could see only two version, Teacher/student, and one with all the exchange features of entourage.

The sad part is, all I need is Word just for compatibility reasons. Keynote is far superior to Power point. Excel is good, I rarely use a spreadsheet, and when I do, I reach now for Numbers. Entourage, never use.

I wonder if they will sell Word as a standalone app?
