Old imac

I have been given an old imac that has a cd draw - 333 MHz
Machine ID: 406 - Processor info: Power PC G3
96MB Memory Original cd disk 8.5 tried an upgrade to 8.6 as I kept on having crashes.
Could some one please tell me what the first extension icon is that is listed at startup. it has a red X through it and I can not tell what the icon is.
I can get the imac to boot for a bit then it locks up. I have reformated the hard drive I have reinstalled from scratch & I have run Nortons. I normally have to clear the pram to get the thing to boot. I am starting to think it may be a ram problem. Nortons & disk first aid show the hard drive as ok.
I have tried 9.1 it wont boot of the cd but if I install from 8.5 then reboot I just get the happy face.
Cheers

that red x means that the extention did not load, so not knowing what is installed on that mac, who knows what it is. have you tryed starting while holding down the shift key? this will load the os without all the extentions and see if that works. if it does, then turn off all extentions, and turn them one one at a time and reboot, until you cant boot, then you know which one is bad.

Hi sinclair_tm
There is nothing loaded on the old imac expect OS8.5 I reformatted the drive so the only files are what mac loads. I have tried the extenoins path with no luck
Just when I think I have it nailed it locks again. I took out 1 of the ram chips and that made no difference so I will swap it with the other ram chip and see what happens. When it locks up the only chance I get to get going again is if I clear the pram
Cheers
Peter

Did you try what sinclair_tm mentioned? Holding down Shift right after the Macintosh startup chime? Once you see the "Mac OS" logo with the words "Extensions Disabled", then you can let go. This mode is like Safe Mode, where it only loads the operating system without the extensions and controls panels so you can troubleshoot the operating system.
