Olympus Digital Camera SmartCard Reads

I just inherited an Olympus D-400 digital camera, old serial port connection so using Dazzle external USB card reader into my G-4, OS 10.2.8.

When I download the smart card images through the reader, I can copy all images to the computer, but then trying to run the card in the camera again, the card crashes. The camera will no longer recognize the card or reformat it, and cards are not cheap.

Any ideas???

Sounds to me like this was a repeating problem, meaning you managed to fix it and whenever you download data it gets again unreadable. Is that right?
Well, are you deleting the card with your usb reader after you downloaded the pics?
Are you able to access the card after it "crashed" with your usb card reader?
I am surprised why you are using that card reader at all. I mean, the digi cam has an usb plug as well.
I tend to download the pics from the cam and finally delete them using the cam menu.
 
The camera does not have a USB port, he tells me, it just has serial.

I suspect it's the reader... which would you recommend?
 
Oh, my mistake.
Seems the reader is messing up, as arden said as well. I think I heard of some serial2usb adaptors. Could this work so you wouldn't have to use the reader? And what's with your smart card now? Messed for eternity or what?

Thanks for all of the input. The card reader on the computer is there because this camera is old enough to not have USB connection and was used with an older Mac with a serial port.

I have successfully read data off of the Smart Media cards and not lost formatting but it is quite dubious as to the consistancy of this as the last 64 mb. card got de-formatted when I copied data then went back to the camera, so still looking for a way to read the cards, then keep the Olympus format and erase images in the camera rather than do any changes in the computer, which is guaranteed to dump the format.

I have considered trying to reformat the cards completely in the computer, and then see if the camera can then reformat from scratch, but have not quite gotten there yet. OH WELL!!!

I read a review of a card reader that could take 6 different kinds of cards. Might be overkill for you, though.
