Does anyone know if there's a utility out there that will put open app icons on the menubar (always visible, not on a drop-down list) instead of on the dock? It's one of the two or three things I think Windoze actually got right. Any help would be appreciated.
That's true - you do in Windows. I just like to have them visible. But I just put my dock in the upper right corner of the finder, and it seems to work well and not be in the way.
Would that do the trick? Drag a folder (e.g. from your documents) to your dock, right from the vertical bar (close to trash, like in mine), then add subfolders if you like, and do aliases to the programs and files you want to get a quick access to. Then just ctrl- (or right click) click to get to them. Saves place on dock and makes it look cleaner...
I think you will also like to change some of the icons for the folders (apps, files etc) (like that furry ball on my example) - get some icons e.g. from xicons.com - and change .. apple-i to get the info of the file or folder you want to change the icon, then apple-i also for the icon file, apple-c (copy) the icon picture, apple-v (paste) the icon to the app/folder/file info where you want it to. To take away the custom icons, then just hit del on the same info (apple-i) window. ... for example that Jolt icon on the dock is for project builder, tux-apple for BBedit, .. the rest should be recognizeable
Don't know if this would work for what you want, but Rocket Launcher is an effective app to get more usage from your menu bar if you don't want to keep your dock cluttered. And you can use whatever icons you want as well.
