Open Office supports formats that Microsoft Word understands, like
Word and RTF. So if you have Open Office, you can save the documents
in Word format and read them in Microsoft Word.
And if you save the documents in OpenOffice's OpenDocument format, it should be able to open without any issues on any other productivity suite that supports it (most suites already support it, with the exception of Microsoft Office I believe).
