Opening documents

This may seem trivial, but it drives me nuts. I have a document folder on my desktop that ends .dll When I click it to open I get the message; there is no default application specified to open the document, choose application. So I click choose and get a menu with two selections, recommended applications and applications shown. No matter what I select, the open command at the bottom of the menu stays greyed out and I can't open the document.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the fast reply Bob.
I tried removing the extension but when I reopened the document it just remained a blank.

You said it was a folder with .dll' on the end of the name.

Is it a folder or document?

If it's a document, it's a PC document and may not open on a Mac.

.dll's are PC sytem files.
