Optical input Static & Not seen by Audacity

Hi there!
I am trying to record from my stereo with toslink optical output. I have it plugged in to the toslink input on the back of my G5 dual 2gig.
All I get in the sound controll panel is a topped out indicator (Sound overload.\ static)
Audacity does not see anything but built in audio option.
I have checked connections and I am definately going from out to in.
I have restarted the computer copiously and re-installed audacity
Any answers?

I'm going to answer my own question for the benefit of anyone out there who might have the same problem. The problem ended up being solved by restarting the stereo receiver that was doing the output.
