Hello,
I tried to install OS 10.3 on a G3 blue & white from a software restore DVD, but the screen went B&W and almost unreadable. Is there some reason I shouldn't be able to do this? I have used this DVD to install system software on other machines.

many thanks
Bruce S

Software Restore DVD? That contains the version of OS X compatible for whichever kind of Mac it was created to. So if it was e.g. for an iMac G5, it is meant to be used with an iMac G5.

You are actually only licensed to use the copy of Mac OS X that came with a system on that system.

And yes, you shouldn't be able to do this. The only way to get away with it is usually if the other systems are similar in configuration to the one the restore DVD was designed for. And considering that the last B&W G3 was made quite a few years before any version of 10.3 was bundled with new Macs, there would be very few similarities between those systems.

Installing Mac OS X on systems that either didn't come with it or came with an earlier version is the reason Apple sells boxed versions with media designed to work with all supported systems. There are still places you can buy 10.3, and usually for quite a bit less than it originally shipped for.

It might also be possible that you need to update your firmware on your B&W G3. I'm not certain as to whether there was a firmware update or not. But the best way to find out is to make sure your B&W G3 has OS 9 installed and fully updated to Mac OS 9.2.2. Booted in OS 9, got to the Apple Menu > Control Panels > Software Update and make sure that you've installed all of the updates. If there is a firmware update available for it, Software Update should offer it to you. If SW Update offers you updates, install them, reboot and then check SW Update again to make sure there are no more updates available.

And the other posters may be right that the DVD you have came bundled with your other Mac, it may not work with the B&W G3.

Also make sure your DVD-ROM drive is clean using an appropriate laser lens cleaner. Make sure the the DVD is also clean and not scratched or cracked.
