OS 8.5.1 -> OS X via Ethernet?

Hey folks,

I've had a beige G3/266 sitting in storage for several years, and I'd like to donate it to a school or other good cause that might still get some use of it (something I should have done years ago). Before doing so, I need to get some data off the hard drive, and I'm struggling to connect the machine to my PowerBook G4 17" (OS X 10.4.3). I've bought a crossover cable, but I haven't been able to get the machines to see one another (e.g. by typing the PowerBook's IP address into the G3's Chooser). Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
John

You have to set up file sharing and use AppleTalk. Well that's what I did a while back. Can't remember all the details now.

Set the "old" machine so that the hard disc is shareable and turn on the file sharing in the Apple Menu/Control panel. Also turn on AppleTalk.

On the OSX machine Use the GO menu in Finder to set up a network.

Think you also turn on AppleTalk in the Network Settings.

As I said, it's been a while since I worked it out.

Ethernet ports are self detecting, so any cable should work.

You need to set each computer's ethernet up manually. On OS 8, start with the TCP/IP control panel and configure manually and enter an IP address of 192.168.1.10. Then, on OS X, in Network Prefs - Show built-in ethernet, TCP/IP tab, configure manually with IP address of 192.168.1.11. You can then turn on appletalk on both. You have to connect from OS 8 to the OS X computer - you get errors if you try from 10.4. I'm not sitting at a Tiger computer right now - you may actually have to enter server IP address in Chooser to connect from OS 8 to Tiger.

Good luck.

Hey guys--thanks for the very quick responses. After performing the steps your described & then (key step) turning on sharing on the OS X machine (PowerBook), I was able to mount the PowerBook hard drive from the OS 8 machine (G3). The problem now is that the transfer from G3 to PB immediately stalls. I was able to get one text file across the wire, but the transfer shows little or no progress, and eventually the G3 reports that the connection has closed down. I don't know what's causing this as the physical connection remains intact & I'm not running other apps. I'm now using a generic Ethernet cable, but I'll try switching back to the crossover cable and see whether that makes a difference.

FWIW, trying to connect from the PB to the G3 (using Connect to Server in the Finder) doesn't work. The connection times out after a long period of searching.

I am able to connect in a similar situation. G3 running OS8 (not positive which version), and iMac G5 running Tiger, but I connect through a hub/ router. It only connects from the G3 TO the Tiger box, though.

Using the set up mentioned above but don't forget to check "personal file sharing" on the Tiger machine.

On the 8 machine: Chooser>appleshare>select OSX computer's name>and use the master user name and password to mount the HD.
