OS 9.2.1 Update Locks up on install

Hi,

I am trying to install the update to a machine that is installed with os 9.1 to 9.2.1 and i have downloaded files from apple.com and have read the instructions. When I am in mac os 9 and run the install updater i go through the wizard but immediatly when i hit the last continue the mouse and keyboard freeze and is unusable.
PLEASE help.

it is a mac g3, 640mb ram, 400mhz ppc cpu

Is it a G3 iMac or a Power Mac G3 Blue and White (the former is an all-in-one and the latter is a tower)? You might need a firmware update for it to run 9.2.x (this says it's also for OS X but you might need it for OS 9 as well).

My thinking is that you're encountering a freeze due to some random extension. Try rebooting the computer with the SHIFT key held down to disable extensions, then run the updater/installer.

A Firmware update might also be necessary, but the installer should alert you to that. To check, go to the Apple Menu > Control Panels > Software Update and see if it offers it to you. Alternatively, if you have a 9.2.1 updater, there might be some FirmWare updates included with the installer. You would want to install the FirmWare update first.
