OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.1 Networking Problem

I have a G3 desktop running 9.2.2, and a G3 PowerBook running OS X 10.1.3.

I have a small network at my office consisting of an ethernet laser printer, the 2 macs listed above and a windows PC running maclan, but don't worry about the pc, that's the least of my problems. The hub is a basic Farallon 8 port 10 base T.

Now, the PowerBook running X can see everything on the network and connects succesfully to everything - no problem... But when I try to connect to the PowerBook from the OS 9.2.2 Mac, I get problems and no connection... Firstly, I select the os X powerbook in the chooser and click ok... The modem starts to dial... I click cancel as I want to connect via ethernet. Then it alows me to enter a user name and password, which I do and when I click Connect, it flashes up an error saying "The connection to this server has unexpectedly broken".

I just want to use plain old appletalk, to connect - is it possible? Anyone know what's wrong here?

Would very much appreciate any tips... Thanks.

Jamie.

It is bizarre that the G3 starts dialing. I would look at the network setup.

To connect to OS X first turn on sharing in the OS X system preferences. From this page you will see the IP address of that machine. Write it down. No go to the G3. From the chooser select Appleshare then click the option to enter an IP address. Enter the address you just wrote down then follow the prompts.

When you log on use the same user name and password as when you log on to OS X directly.

ihad a problem similar ....

try to set to mac os 9 machine an ip address (using TCP/IP control panel) as for ex 10.0.0.1 and as subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and to mac os x machine a different ip (using SystemPreferences -> Network) as for ex. 10.0.0.2 and as subnet the same subnet assigned in os 9

now from the chooser select the AppleShare icon and then click on the enter ip address button on the right of the chooser window ... enter the mac os x machine ip address (in this case 10.0.0.2) and .... good work

it worked for me !!

I actually solved the problem this morning. I'm no expert on TCP/IP but I thought that if I set it to ethernet, my internet connection would try to use it. It doesn't, I set TCP/IP to ethernet instead of PPP and now I can connect to the OS X machine, my modem still dials up ok with these settings.

Thanks to anyone who replied.

Jamie.
