OS 9: Speed > 8.6?

I'm on a 72 mhz machine and it's somewhat slow running 8.6, and I was just wondering if 9's any more efficient as far as speed goes.

I guess 8.6 is already sluggish on a 72MHz machine. Do not install 9 on this, stay with old but responsive systems.

Are you SURE your computer is 72MHz ?!

that 7200 is a 75 mHz. But you should double check as they also came out with a 90 and a 120. Your slowness is probably because to the low memory. Also, when was the last time you defraged? Norton utilities does a good job. Just do not install it. Boot from the CD and run it.

If you do decide to upgrade to 9, you will need to invest in more memory.

Yeah.. I think i have like 32 megs in it.

Is memory for old systems cheap because its old or expensive because it's rare?

To check to see exactly what you have - go to the Apple menu>About this computer. The screen that will come up will give you the exact amount of memory installed and how much is being used.

Memory prices are pretty cheap. Unless it is a part that is rare or special. My honey has a Dell that has these special memory chips that only Dell makes and they charge what they feel like.
A 128mb should run about $20-$30. MacWarehouse usually has the best prices. Give them the model number and they will let you know if it is in stock.

J/W... do I have to buy specialized memory? Because I have a crap windows boxen lying around and if it's universal I can use the ones in it.

You can check everymac.com to see what kind of memory you have in your machine, then head over to dealram.com to find the best prices on the type of memory. Most Mac resellers jack up the price on RAM a wee bit.

On the 7200 you have four slots that take 168 pin DIMMS rated at 70ns or higher. You can max it out at 512MB.
