OS X and B/W

Vard

Looking for progress
Anyone using OS X on a B/W?

Thinking about getting one for some recording and just wanted to get some real world feedback on what to expect.

If you feel like replying, can you also post your systems guts so I have a frame of reference towards the ones that I am looking at.

Also, if you have any suggestions regarding the B/W's, I'd love to hear that as well. Thanks for you comments.

Sincerely,
Eddie

I'm using 10.2.6 on a B&W 350/704mb RAM/orig video card/Radeon 7000/30gb Maxtor/40gb Seagate

10.2.6 runs OK on my setup. 10.1.5 definately seemed snappier.

I am a web developer and I do quite a bit of my mysql, php and html work on this machine.

It should work fine for what you are looking for, as long as you don't expect blazing fast speeds.

As far as what to get. Get a Rev B motherboard. I believe (don't take my work on this though) that anything 450 and up will have a rev b board.
350 and 400 can have either the original or rev b board.
While 300 will have the original board

The rev b board allows you to add multiple HD's without hassle, while the original requires you to go through some hoops.

I'm using 10.1.5 on a B&W 400 (over clocked 300) with 448 MB RAM and 40 GB HD. Smooth.

I'm running 10.2.8 on a B&W 400 (overclocked 350) Rev A, 1 GB RAM, Radeon 7000, stock Quantum 12 GB hard drive, ATAPI Zip-100, 12x10x32 Lite-On CDRW, USB 2.0 card with DVD-ROM and 80 GB WD hard drive (in USB 2.0 enclosures) hanging on it, Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card with an internal Seagate 8.6 GB hard drive, Epson Perfection 1260 Photo scanner. Runs smoothly.

Got it...

After a bunch of searching around on Ebay, I found the one I wanted. Actually, I had been following some others and was starting to get depressed about the prices they were going up to. Just for fun I did another search on Ebay to see if anything new had been added, and indeed it had.

Check out my sig for the stats on the G3. I got it set up last night and then hooked into the cable. Let's here it for broadband--between some essential programs that I needed to get and all the updates this system needed from Apple, it was something north of 500 MB to download. Went flawlessly!

I must say that I am extremely surprised at how well it run OS X. Sure, there's a difference between it and my G4, but based on the performance I've seen so far, I got a deal and half. And when Panther finally settles down in a month or so I will be upgrading both machines.

Anyway, just needed to tell everyone how stoked I am to get a machine that is over 4 years old and does more than I would have expected of it.

Thanks for all the help, suggestions and feedback everyone dished up.

Later,
Eddie
