OS X and internet protection

Why are (we) MAC (OS X) users so non-concerned about having true internet protection? All I hear and read about is getting the best software firewall. Having a DSL connection where you are always connected, how can people sleep at night without a hardware firewall? I would really like to know because I am about to get a DSL connection.

If it helps you sleep at night by all means get one. But keep in mind that a hardware firewall is just a box itself running a software firewall... Be careful the marketers are not scaring you into a purchase you don't need (not that anybody in marketing would think of such a thing.)

Really if you are comparing apples to apples and both firewalls are correctly configured they offer equivalent protection from your prospective. Now if you have unfriendly people on the inside (like surfing employees) a hardware box might be preferable so that Bob can't just turn off his firewall to get at macosx.com rather than paying attention to an important teleconference. Another case where a hardware firewall makes sense is in a multiple computer configuration where you just can't secure the boxes (or can't be bothered.) Again a good example is where you have employees who fiddle with things.
