OS X Development: Opinion Requested

I have been thinking...it seems there is a lot more programs written for Mac OS X then there ever was for the earlier OS's What are your thoughts?

lol. I seriously doubt that. I think there are still many more apps written for the classic Mac OS than there are for Mac OS X. There was always plenty of freeware and shareware, and commercials apps were not uncommon at all. It just seems like there weren't.

However, if you want to talk about CURRENT development.... yes, people are slowly moving over to X. And as Apple makes programming/porting easier for X, there will be even more X apps.

Ah... I can still remember playing "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" on CD-ROM (oooh!) on my Centris 660AV....

i agree with you bossa nova. and i think a large part of it is due to the mixed reporting of classic and 'nix apps. plus, any time a new os like this appears, the doors are wide open for new developers to get a jump and cash in on the lack of complete app readiness of the big guys.

i would say there has never been a better time to be a starting developer, or a developer with a new app.. there is plenty of money to be made with the development of useful, meaningful apps right now. just starting small and continuing to build a basic app could lead to something big down the road. Do you realize you can buy omniweb in the stores, all packaged and nice looking?

Yup, clearly, the open source development for the Mac took a jump when 'we' switched to a UNIX platform. The question is what's important. And I guess both commercial and non commercial development is important. Open Source has yet to show that it can beat the biggies like Microsoft, Adobe or Macromedia in their own fields. What I'm wishing for is that Mac OS X gets (even) more focus from the commercial companies.
