OS X hangs after system update

Looking for a bit of help, I have a new Imac that has been working perfectly ungtil this morning, yesterday I downloaded a big system update but it had problems installing the OS X update bit. This morning when I came to turn the computer on it reaches the grey apple loading screen then hangs forever. I'm a new convert to Macs and know very little about troubleshooting them. The system update may have nothing to do with the problem but seems a bit of a coincidence!

Cheers Guys.

Cheers Guys.

Sometimes when this happens, you can use the option key to pick the startup disk and it will work just fine.

Do you remember the nature of the problems (e.g., error messages) you had during the system update?

There are several methods of influencing how the machine boots up; these are often the first steps in troubleshooting.

The preferred approach for you will be to boot up using your system installation CD, and use the Disk Utility application to check and, if necessary, repair your disk. Read more here.

You can also read about booting into safe mode, as well as key commands for Intel Macs and for non-Intel.

Good luck -- post more info when you can.

Cheers guys unfortunately my boss does not share my tinkering approach to computers and took it back to the shop yesterday!!!, problem solved I guess.
