OS X Mail + Comcast = problem

I am trying to send a 7.7 MB zip file using OS Mail (latest version) and Comcast. Mail presents and error box saying that my attachment is 10.1 MB large. (Finder says it is 7.7 mb max.)

Comcast speculates that OS X Mail is adding 3 MB of encryption/compression to my attachment. I should use Outlook or Entourage (!).

Apple Store staff suggested changing encoding option in Mail but had no clue where it was. I did try "Windows friendly attachment" option but to no avail. My firstborn to anyone who can help me. Thanks.

How are you attaching the file - are you drag 'n dropping or are you clicking Attach File?

I just attached a file here that was 8.1 MB according to the Finder; Mail says it's 7.9 MB.....

I think "Windows Friendly Attachment" is the only encoding option to change.

I wonder if you got the slow tech support guys? Email is designed to be transmitted by all sorts of servers on the internet on its way to your inbox, some of which use 7 bit bytes. To insure that a binary attachment gets through this it must be re-encoded into a format where every byte has a zero high bit. The result of this is that binary files get larger when they are sent a 20% bloat like you are seeing would not be surprising.
