OS X & my ISP

OK is this a coincidence or something serious ?

Here is the story, this friday I went into OS X and tried to do a few things, and while there I decided to come online, check out a few things, but my authentication failed (mind you in OS 9 there was no problem).

I boot back into OS 9, and from that point on the whole weekend went ISP-less! AUthentication errors left and right resulting in me not being able to come online.

Flashback to a few weeks ago when I was ISP-less. Almost the same scenario - boot into OS X, then try to go online, authentication errors, boot back into OS 9, errors persist.

what do you guys think ?
ISP prob in general or OS X causing ISP probs ?

Sounds to me like the problem is with your ISP. My ISP, Adelphia, had a running email problem for months, with the result that my email account authentication would fail. But at least it didn't affect my web browsing.

how are you authenticating - clear text or is it encrypted somehow?

I am using dial-up at the moment because I have had a HW failure on my cablemodem, but I have no problem at all. I find the internet connect utility pants however and tends to lock up aqua a lot. However that is purely client end. Once I get through to the ISP is was fine. I actually find it more stable than NT, though I think that is due to the internal modem in the iBook being better than the one supplied with my PC.

I can understand (to a point anyway) one OS not connecting compared to another. I have had wierd issues before where I have had a lot of noise on the line and different computers/OS's cope with that situation better/worse than others. It is odd that once you have issues it also occurs on the other OS.

That would point to the issue being at the ISP end for me. It cannot be your software - you have presumably re-booted, unless there is a shared component between the OS's. It cannot be hardware, or it would occur more often (reasonable assumption I think). If it were OSX based then it would point to OSX interferring with the authentication service at the ISP end and causing it to have problems for a while. If this is the case then I would say that it is an ISP issue. Altenatively, it could be unrelated. If it happens at the weekend then that is when more people logon to the internet and the ISP is more likely to have issues.

After all that rambling I don't think that I have been much help - sorry.

Roger.
