OS X Volume will not mount on different machine

Maybe someone knows the answer to this one.

At work I often install an image straight off of an external drive that has a system tweaked the way I want it along with all the apps a user needs. This has worked fine with OS 9.

Following the same process I took a new 40 gig drive and put it into a G4 (slaved just like the drive it will replace) that is the same model I am using. I installed OS X and upgraded up to 10.1.3. I copied my home and documents folder on the drive and then removed the drive and installed it as a slave on the machine I currently use.

The drive will not mount. Is this not possible? Does X use a machine id to secure the drive? Is it permissions? Is there a better way to have done this?
Does it have anything to do with prefs with the OS 9 system? This is driving me nuts. I assumed I could install on a drive and move the drive like I do with Windows machines and Macs with OS 9 but the same logic does not seem to apply here.

Anyone have the answer to this?

Gratsi in advance!

John
