Restart the computer and then immediately hold down the mouse button. This should eject the CD. You will probably still get the flashing question mark. Insert the the OS 9 Install CD - not the restore CD .Hold down the C key. Now the computer should boot from the CD.

Go to the Utility folder on the CD and run disk First Aide. Let it repair all the problems it finds.

Once that is done, click twice on the OS 9 installer, then in the second screen click on Options and select perform clean install. When that is done, you will have a fresh system folder and a 'previous system folder'. Restarting the computer should be smooth. now check the previous system folder for your third party files like printer driver.

I recommend you open the previous system folder and trash everything except any third party folders (Eudora, Mozilla, Dataviz) and Control Panels, Extensions, Preferences, Internet Plug ins. The thrid party folders need to be moved to the new system folder and the files in Control panels, Extensions and Preferences need to be compared with the new folders and you need to move over your files that are not Apple.

Now before you try to upgrade, you need to check with Software Update Control panel for any firmware updates. Once that is done, you should be able to upgrade to 9.1
