I have a older mac and It runs os10 I think. When I start the computer /etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
-sh-2.05b#
apprears . I tried starting computer with apple-s and it goes to another screen , but get stuck there . Any advice on what to do

you'll need an installation CD for it. "osx 10" is not a full information string. There's:

Mac OS X 10.0 "Cheetah" (and subsequent free updates like 10.0.1, 10.0.3 etc.)
Mac OS X 10.1 "Puma" (and 10.1.1-10.1.5)
Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" (up to 10.2.8)
Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" (up to 10.3.9)
Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" (up to 10.4.11)
Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" (up to 10.5.6)
Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" (in beta, only for developers so far)

Can you boot it to the install disc?
To open the optical tray: hold down mouse button at startup.

Ok I got to the instalation page, but installer tells me that there's not enough space . It gives me the option to delete some space but it is still of enough space to get installer going .
I can reinstall, but it says that I will loose all existing files.
I need to retreive those files!
Is there any way it can be saved to a USB extrnal hard drive?

If you have an empty USB drive, you should be able to "restore" the internal drive to the external in "Disk Utility" (see the menus in the menubar when started from the CD). Although I must say I'm not entirely sure whether the 10.3 installation disks had the same options exactly as 10.4 and onward... It's too long ago...

ok , its back to square 1!! whatever i was in my earlier post is not working. i have osx10.3. installation disk.
however , when restarting it breifly goes to a white screen, then screen goes black with
/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory.
/etc/master.passwd :No such file or directory
-2.05b#
what should i do ?
Thanks for your advice
