OSX Driver for Mitsumi CDRW Drive?

I've had a Mitsumi CDRW USB drive packaged as a Pacific Digital 4x4x8 drive for some time now. It burns fine under OS 9.X, but not at all under OS X. Not under ANY version of OSX, from 10.0.1 to 10.2.4.

The X side does see the drive, and attempts to burn CDs, but always stops with some "Can't determine disk size" error (refering to the CD blank). This happens whether I use iTunes, Toast, or DiskCopy, latest versions all.

The only thing I can figure out is there is no X driver for this CDRW burner, at least none that I can find. Is there a driver out there that I don't know about? Has somebody written something like the CUPS print drivers for X for USB CD burners?

EDIT: or would I be better off just buying a Firewire drive kit and moving the CD burner in there?

My Mac-Rev A. Blue and White G3 with G4 CPU upgrade, 640 MB ram, 40 GB HDD.

Do you have the latest version of Toast? My Mitsumi USB works well in OS X.

The latest version is 5.2.1 right? In that case, yes, I do have the latest Toast. But every time I try to burn with it it gives a series of errors, the last one being "Unable to read free space on the disk".

Yet when I boot into OS 9, the OS 9 version of Toast burns CDs like a champ.
