OSX freezing at boot waiting for NIS

I am new to the MAC after 20+ years on the PC's and others! I recently bought a G4 1GHz 17" Powerbook and set about setting it all up with as many toys as I could lend my hand to. The problem came after I changed some settings and foolishly put in my Windows Domain for the NIS. During boot up I am now getting the message "Waiting for Network Information Service", Oh joy!! So I checked around on the web for a solution to solve the problem and chanced by a site that advised to modify the etc/hostconfig file using the comands... Mount -uw then Pico etc/hostconfig. However when editing the file and doing the CTRL X I say to save it and I am refused as the write permissions are not applied.
My question would be what is the procedure to edit this file, or failing this is there a way of changing the settings back easily?

I hope someone can help...

Many thanks

If it finally boots up, open the Directory Access app in the Utilities folder and configure the NIS service.

To edit the file, type sudo pico /etc/hostconfig

It will ask for a password. Enter you admin password. You are now editing the file as a superuser.
