OSX10.3 iBook blind to Epson driver

When my wife's new Intel iMac died today (motherboard, 2 weeks for Apple to fix it), I replaced it with a G4/OSX10.3.9 iBook we use for travelling. Got everything she needs working on the iBook except her Epson CX5400 Printer-Scanner.

This needed a driver.

I d/led and installed the 10.3 version of the CX5400 driver from Epson - but the printer selector refuses to see it. I tried both USB and Epson USB settings (the printer shows as USB). Deleted all previous Epson software on the machine except Epson Scanner Monitor which refuses to be trashed because it claims to be running...I can't get it to stop running.

A solution would be much appreciated. (She's an artist/PhotoShop Queen and needs the printer to output her work.)

MacOS X 10.4 print engine is different enough from the MacOS X 10.3 print engine that the older drivers don't work. You must use drivers that ship with the newer OS or download MacOS X 10.4-compatible drivers from the manufacturer's website. If the manufacturer has not updated drivers for MacOS X 10.4, then you must use a CUPS driver from the Gutenprint project or the Linux Foundation (formerly LinuxPrinting.org).
