Outlook 4.5 to 5.0.6

hi my friend is upgrading from outlook 4.5 to outlook express 5.0.6. he has 1.26GB of emails that he would like to import to the outlook expres. each time we try to do it he gets an error, either a unexpected quit or it just hangs.

Can any of you remember if there were any issues with file size and importing in outlook express?

1.2 GB of emails is an awful lot of emails. Can he open the old version and go through those emails to delete (then empty the trash) the ones he really does not need?
