Ownership and Permissions

Is there a way I can set "Read & Write" as the default for Ownership and Permissions? For some reason, when I send a file from one computer to another over the internet, the file changes to read only. I often send files between my home and office. I have to use get info each time to change permissions. Is there a way of making read and write the default?

You can set your permissions through a server by using TinkerTool. Do a search on the web for it.

And before you send a file, try doing a Get Info on it (command + I) and change the permissions that way. You may have to update your admin account on your computer to allow you to adjust your permissions settings to what you want.

What kinds of files are you sending?

(I know you aren't sending the file through a server, but at an on-site location I work at we have to use TinkerTool to force our files to be Read & Write on the server, otherwise they revert to Read Only; a MAJOR drag.)

How do I set permissions in admin acct.?

I am sending text documents. It is a program called MarnierWrite.

First thing I would check is that the files you create are actually Read & Write files. Get info on one and see. If it isn't you can set this by doing Get Info on the file and setting it for any file of that same type.

Here's what I would do to change the Read Write prefs of every file on your hard drive. But make sure you do some research before you do this, since I am not nearly as experienced as some on this website.

I did it on my laptop. You can select your hard drive and Get Info. Make sure you set the entire hard drive's permissions to your user name (you need to be the "admin" for your computer, look in System Prefs/Accounts for this) and then make sure your permissions are set to Read & Write, Read & Write and Read Only (the last one is allowing access to users outside your computer, which you don't want to allow especially if you are on the internet).

You have to apply this change to all enclosed items and depending on the speed of your computer this will take several minutes so have a good book handy.

Should I set Owner to my user name? Presently it is set to "System." Should I set Group to my user name? Presently it is set to "Admin."

If it means anything, I am the onnly one who uses this computer. Thanks.

First change just your permissions, leave the admin "name" alone in that field. If this doesn't fix your problem then you can go ahead and change admin to your user name. For my computer it's nathanielflick.

Also, as a test, send a file compressed with aladdin drop stuff and see if it comes up with it's permissions changed on the other end. Make sure the permissions are set on that file first to Read & Write.
