packages cannot be installed

I was given an Ibook G4 12 inch, needs re-install badly
A friend loaned me his OSx tiger install disk from his 17 inch G4

When I try to install it says packages cannot be installed on this computer
 
That is quite correct, it can only be installed on the type of Mac that it came with. It is licenced to that machine only and cannot be legally installed on another one.

you will need to buy an OS 10.4 licence from Apple to get it installed on your iBook, which should have its own restore disc. Where did you get it from as the previous owner should have the disc ?
 
I'd try an Apple Store or "store which sells Apple products" (what should I call them? we don't have original Apple Stores here, so I call any store selling Macs an Apple Store... hmm...). Go there with as much original information on the computer as you can get and try to get the original installation disks for that iBook. Might be Panther - but who cares...
