Panther Preview Problems

devil's plaything
Panther on my iForced G4 500MHz Bondi iMac seems fairly stable and absolutely crash-proof, but there exists the following strange little quirk: images downloaded with Safari appear to have custom icons when Finder is set to View as Icons, but manifest generic file icons in List view. Their [Get] Info windows also show a generic icon but a proper preview pane. This can be remedied by dropping the icons onto Pic2Icon, but saving the files with Preview or QT brings back the accursed generic icons. Disks & permissions have been verified; could there still be some corruption in the system or is this behavior normal in OS 10.3.2? And if there is no technical fix for this problem, does anyone know of a good spell I could cast? Tearing my hair out and screaming "aaaaargh!" doesn't seem to have helped thus far... ::evil::

The custom icons are a view option (press Command-J, and select "Show Icon Preview") in the Finder. It only works for icon view though, and it doesn't really give the files a new icon, just lets you see a preview of it. If you want icons that have custom icons of the picture at all times, you can use Pic2Icon (available here: http://www.sugarcubesoftware.com/ ).

I'm not having the problem in Icon view, only in List view. Apparently the Icon in the Info panel is read in List view, and the Preview picture is read in Icon view. As I said, using Pic2Icon does create a proper customized Icon; saving the file later in Preview, say after a minor mod (e.g. Rotate Right), or even with no modification, results in a generic icon in the Info box and in List (not Icon) view again.
Anyway, I take it that this weirdness is peculiar to OS X and not just a faulty installation on my part... whew, ThanX!
