I would like to partition my external hdd for use to back up my PS3 and to store my Final Cut Projects. The PS3 can only use FAT32. It is possible to create two partitions, one FAT32 and the other Mac OS extended, and still have the PS3 recognize the drive? If so, will I have to set it for Master Boot Record?

You can have two formats like FAT and HFS+ journaled, but the problem is the underlying partition scheme across the drive can be set to GUID, APM, or MBR, not two or more different partition schemes. So for example, if you left the partition table as MBR with two partitions you theoretically could have one formatted as FAT and the other Formatted as HFS+journaled but it may give you problems.

The only thing that comes to mind now is storing large files might give you issues since HFS+ can handle large files but for instance FAT can only handle up to 4GB per file, and the FAT or MS-DOS format is on MBR partitions. If you went with GUID or APM as the partition type with a FAT or MS-DOS format, a Windows based machine won't even see the drive.
