Pay-as-you-go Broadband

I regularly visit friends and relatives who don't have any internet access. Or they have dial-up, which doesn't allow me to piggyback my laptop. (Of course, these days, that means they're probably eligible for federal hardship subsidy.)

Verizon sells a 3G access pay-as-you-go plan: $15/day, $30/week, $50/month. Of course, you must have a compatible "modem". Again, Verizon sells one (USB) for $129, I think. I would be willing to swallow that NRE as long as I don't have to pay for each of 12 months during which I might use 2 weeks, tops.

Does anyone have experience with this? Are there offers other than Verizon?
