PB G3 Bronze - Jaguar freezes - Help

Hi all,

Since I upgraded my PowerBook G3 400 Bronze, 192 MB RAM to Jaguar, my PB starts to freeze every time.
When I'm navigating on web, copying files, and when the hangs occurs, there are no excessive CPU, memory and disk utilization (looking to MenuMeters counters).
I don't think that's a hardware problem because if I boot and use 9.2 the freeze don't occurs so frequently.

What's up ?
Please someone help me.

Thanks in advance.

Before you upgraded, did you update the firmware? Did you update the drive drivers?
Have you run the Disk Utility?

When you upgraded, did you do a clean install?

Boot in OS 9 and check the Memory control panel (Apple Menu>Control panels>memory)
Make sure disk cache is set to 6,144k. Virtual memory is ON and Ram Disk is OFF. Close the window, restart the computer and as you select restart, hold down the option and the apple keys until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. This will appear after the extensions load at the bottom. Release the keys and click on okay.
Now run through a few things in OS 9. Do you still freeze? If not, then start up in OS X and gives things a try.

What are you doing when it freezes? After you installed the OS, what thrid party programs did you install besides your rpinter driver?

Cheryl,

Thanks for your patience. I verify those things in 9 and made the rebuild.
I'm using the os 9 without a freeze.
Just one thing, I saw your last post and you asked me about firmware update but I don't know where to find the firmware update and I don't know how can I see what version I'm using. If you know please tell me.
I noted yesterday before I made your sugestions that using the user root (logged as root on Jaguar) the powerbook don't freeze.
What do you think ?

What are you doing when it freezes ?
The most of times navigating on web using IE or Safari, geting mails using mail or entourage, using Bryce, etc
Normally using just one application at time, and it hangs. Freeze...

I'll try on X as you told me and I'll keep you informed.

Thanks in advance.

Eduardo

PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard) no update needed
Eduardo,

If you have Os 9.2.1 installed you need to check out
http://docs.info.apple.com/article....l?artnum=120030

then for running 10.2 you need this firmware:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117

You also need the Modem updater:
Article # 24772 & 24773
You can find the updater in the software updates section.

Hi Cheryl,
I'm already using OS 9.2.2 and Jaguar 10.2.6.
Looking on the above link for 10.2, there are no update for PowerBook G3 Bronze as follows from Apple article 86117:

"PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze Keyboard) no update needed"

If you have any ideas please let me know.

Thanks.

Eduardo
