Pc-mac Wireless

Hi there

my upstairs landlords are getting high-speed cable internet installed. We are hoping to set up a wireless router to share their signal.

They are on PC. We are on Mac (2006 iMac).

I suspect they will need a strong router since they are 2 flights up (though both computers near a window) ??

Could someone give me an idiots-walkthrough for how we should best proceed?

Thanks!

Are they in agreement? If not, that is theft. If so, there shouldn't be a problem.

Make sure your airport card is active, and click it in the menu bar. Their wireless router should show up. Click it to join. If it's password protected, you'll need it.

It would be an above board situation!

Are there PC routers that transmit at higher strength than others?

:) No such thing. There's b, g, and n. You can join at whatever speed your Airport card is.

Enjoy---and buy your gracious neighbors a bottle of champaigne.

Yes, linksys has e.g. routers with RANGEBOOSTER. These have a better antenna en a stronger signal. But the other side also has to be strong, otherwise the signal might not make it back.

What floors do you have between the router and your computers. WOOD is no problem, this will hardly influence the strength of your signal. CONCRETE on the other hand reduces signal strength greatly. Also other obstacles (like walls) made out of steel, concrete and stone reduces strongly (and remember the signal takes the straight way, so it does not pop out of the window and back in at the other side if that would be needed (unless you can make a powerfull enough gravity field to bend the rays) to make a link possible, in that case, sorry no link.

Good luck, Kees
