Hey, what's up everyone I'm new here :)
I hate to start with questions, but I need to know this as soon as possible, because without my G4, I feel extremelly depressed, almost as if my (future;)) wife had left me for her new girlfriend, or something just as bad...(or good, who knows..;).)
Anyway, I had an accident with my Powerbook, which is my only computer right now...(used to have a tower, but not with me right now..) I dropped it, and sure enough the screen broke, and I can't tell what's going on... I have a Dell as well (yeah, I know... but I needed it to do petty things that I wouldn't bother my Big Brother with lol), so I connected its monitor to the output of my G4, hoping to at least back up my data, and then go about fixing it....
However, when I boot up, it looks like the external monitor receives some sort of signal, and then goes back to "sleep" few seconds after... All along, the screen remains dark and shows nada... wtf?
I know, my G4 may be busted :(, but it powers up (no start up tone, though..) and it shuts down after I hold down the power button... But all along, the monitor shows nothing...

Anyway, to make the long story short, do I need some kind of "transformer" (like we did back in the days) to connect a pc monitor to the output of my Powerbook G4, or not... As I said, a while back we had to mess with adaptors, and those switches (to get a G3 for ex. to work on a pc monitor..) but I thought those days are gone, since I can plug it straight into the back of G4...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Help the fellow macman in trouble, I'm walking around like crazy without my G4...

sounds like you broke more than the screen...

I have never actually booted up with a second monitor, but I assume nothing happens until you hit detect displays anyway. good luck

The monitor SHOULD work assuming you plug it in and then turn on the powerbook. The detect displays button is only needed when you switch which displays are connected when the computer is already booted.

It sounds like you messed it up pretty bad. If you know someone how has another mac, you might try and use your powerbook in firewire disk mode to try and back up your data. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
