PC to Mac Printer

I have an iMac running 10.3 Panther and a Windows computer. They share internet with a Siemens SpeedStream Router. I am wondering if it is possible to share my HP DeskJet printer, with a serial port connector and USB connector, through the router.

Thanks!

Sorry, Bobbo, this won't be possible. You will need a printserver or a printer that has one included OR a router with a printserver...
Anyway, welcome to the forum! :)

I think it's possible we're not sure what you want to do! If you want to connect the printer to just one of the computers and then share it as a shared printer - Yes, that will work. And if your router has a connector for a USB printer on it - yes that will work.
I think the confusion comes in when you say through the router - as if you can just plug a serial adapter into the router or something - No, that won't work.
The other possible point of confusion - your Speedstream is in fact a router and both computers are peers on the network and get local IP addresses from the router? If this is true, yes, you can share a printer from one computer to the other.

Hope this helps.
If you need more help setting up, ask.

Bobw, why buy a new one when his current one is USB already? ((my HP DeskJet printer, with a serial port connector and USB connector))

Bobbo, you could hook the printer to either machine and share it. I would personally do it with the Mac. The reason being is if you print to a shared Windows printer from OS X, you're gonna have to use the CUPS/GIMP driver...and it's not very good. Now if you share it on you Mac, then the Mac uses the proper HP driver and the Windows machine uses it's own driver (or one you download/install).

Another option would be to replace the current router. E-Bay what you got or find someone who needs it, then buy yourself something with an internal print server. We use a DLink 704p (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=63) at the office, works fine. They also have a 704up (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=272) which has a USB connection instead of the standard serial one. Other companies may have similar products, but I haven't used them so I couldn't recommend any of them.

I was thinking it was a serial printer and he was using a USB adapter. Fairly easy to share printers from a Mac to a PC.

bobbo If you need help, let us know what model printer you have.

Thanks. I got it, unfortuntely with the way things are set up in the room I had to share through the windows machine, but I just had to set it up as a shared printer, and download an HP driver for my mac and things are working fine.
