PerlMagick: getting Annotate() to work.

I am using the ImageMagick library in Perl, and can't get the Annotate() method to work. It's supposed to put text onto an image. It has no effect at all, and I wonderred whether it could be to do with fonts. Should I have done something special when I installed to give it access to fonts? What fonts should I be able to use?
