Permanent IP address

I know very little about networking and have a question about assigning IP addresses- is it possible to assign a permanent IP address to a computer? Currently, I have 2 Macs and 3 Win XP. The problem is that if one or more of the machines go off line, next time they come back up they all have different ip addresses. Is there a way to avoid them swapping their IP addresses? thanks.

There should be an option under the Advanced section of your router's set up page. From there, look for an option to reserve IP's by Mac address.

Which brand is your router? I might be able to give you more specific instructions.

You can assign permanent IP address **within** your LAN, but if your machines are being assigned an internet IP by an ISP, that's a different ballgame.

The vast majority of Cable, DSL and (especially) dial-up providers provide only a dynamic IP address, assigned at power-up time. If you want a static (permanent) internet IP address, you'll have to talk to your ISP, and probably pay more per month.

I have Netgear 4-Port 10Base-T Ethernet Hub - here is how it all connected:
DSL modem<-- Extreme Air Base station-->hub<--Powermac and Win XP

So, I guess my airbase station assigns IPs for internet connection and LAN - is that correct? or LAN ips are assigned by the hub?
I am designing a site in Dreamweaver and since it's dynamic, I use asp.net and IIS to test it. (Trying to be cross-platform as much as possible ;) )Therefore, my files are stored on a win xp machine. so the problem is that when I set up a new site in Dreamweaver l had to specify an IP address for my win machine and if an IP address changes, I get those annoying messages in Dreamweaver and have to re-set it.

Yes, your airport is probably assigning the IP addresses -- unless you've enabled 'Airport-to-Ethernet Bridging', in which case your ISP's DHCP server is assigning them.

Bridging is off by default.

ok, so is there a way to assign permanent IP addresses using Air Base Station or it has to be done via hub? If it has to be done via hub, wouldn’t it interfere with the Air Base Station?

You need to do this via the Airport Admin Utility. I am not familiar with it, but would be surprised if it didn't have an option to reserve specific local ips by mac address.

The netgear hub will respect whatever you set in the Airport Admin Utility, since hubs can't act as DHCP servers as router's can.
