I was attempting to un-allwow another user to access my 2nd hdd and external hdd. The disks still appear in Disk Utility but they are not on my desktop. The Repair Permission buttons are unavailable. Id like to know if there is a way to access my information on these disk without reformating. Thanks you for your help.

You could try repairing the permissions by booting from the diagnostics disc provided with your Mac. (Grasping at straws here.)

If all you care about is recovering the files, and not necessarily setting the permissions correctly, you could always run a "sudo chmod -R 777" from a terminal. The problem with that is that you'd make every file readable, writeable, and executable by any user using your machine.

In Disk Utility, click on the disk, then click the Mount button and see if it mounts.
