Persistent data

As a newbie, can I ask a question that might seem obvious to some of you?

Do Mac OS's have any equivalent of the Windows Registry - i.e. a central store where programs should save and retrieve default settings and other persistent data? I know that this can be achieved with files, of course but I just wondered if there was a recommended method / recommended place etc, like in Windows, or is each app expected to make its own proprietory arrangements?

Mac programs create their own separate .plist files to store preferences. Macs don't have a central repository like the Registry, thank Jobs.
