Help!

My macbook 2.4 bought last nov 2008 was installed with i-life 2009. The OS is Leopard 10.5. The problem now is that I cant launch the photobooth application and i-chat cant detect the i-sight camera. Is it the newer version of i-life thats causing this! Bought this mac from a friend and I really dont know if the factory installed OS is the one that is installed now. It may have been upgraded likewise. Does all this relate to the fatc that I cant use photobooth and ichat doesnt detect the isight?
Im a newbie to mac so pls enlighten me. TNX!

Does photobooth launch with no picture and just black with a little X over a small camara icon? If so there is a good chance its hardware.

Otherwise, you could create another dummy user to test if it is a user issue, but that's doubtful.

The best way to test is boot through an external HD or a similar machine in target disk mode to test to see if its hardware. If you don't have these resources you may want an authorized Apple shop to look at it.

Ok thanks! I have done a lot of upgrading on-line to see if its a compatibility issue but to no avail. The hardware problem may have been caused by replacement works on the topmost or surface part of the mac just below the keyboards- the part that gets cracks and damages easily-done under warranty. The warranty expires oct 29, 09. So i can still bring it there. Is the circuitry of the camera anywhere near that topmost area where the replacement works have been made? You think the technician may have left out 1 small wire disconnected? TNX for your prompt response!

It sounds like the top case was replaced. That repair shouldn't have interfered with the camara unless it became unplugged from the logic board when the top case was replaced. Take advantage of it still being under warranty to get it fixed.

OK djackmac, when i brought the unit to the service center, the isight camera suddenly worked! I dont know if the "magic" stroke that technician carlos did on the hinge of the lcd did the job, but Im happy now its working! Now my kids spent the whole evening playing with photobooth- their first time. Going back to what happend this afternoon, I still dont know how the technician did it. He himself did not say he intentionally stroked the hinge- it was just his mannerism to do that- like a pet lover stroking the dogs head. So now my problem is solved, thanks to your prompt response and expert knowledge!

Possibly a loose connection of some sort. Just keep testing it periodically to make sure its not an intermittent issue before the warranty runs out. You may want to try to move the display forward and backward while photobooth is launched to see if the camera cuts out.
